Our saga begins in the fall 1995. Greg and I were experiencing multiple crisis (financial, domestic and existential.) Production had just been completed on the project Apocrypha. It was Peter Zolli, a fella who had been recording at Toad Hall, who helped finish the album and would then play a crucial role in what was going to happen next, both in my studio and in my life. |

A year of inertia had taken a toll, as had a series of unhappy relationships. I was energized and it was time to do something. So I began recording but was floundering, not wanting to repeat things that we had done before. Pete offered to help with the tracks, and in the process we (Greg, Peter and I) began to form Narcotic Effect. This would predicate a long series of creative adventures and misadventures (Bret Hart and The Cheagles, Freak Music Raincoat, and um other things.) |
The idea of Narcotic Effect started to take solid form in Pete's head, as a way to record, as an audio expression. I went along with the gag. I wrote some intense stuff at the time. Silence was written when my lawyer called me up and said my divorce (which took two years) would finally be settled.* She Believes was a goofy pop song, Nevermind was one the best f-you songs I ever have written. Work continued quickly but already tensions started to rise. Peter and I had distinct creative ideas and they did not always mesh. Hence Peter later referring to this project as the “queasy compromise.” *On 1.4.1996, my divorce was finally adjuduacted. I had custody of my son. My legal nightmare was over. |
In the process Instant Dogma, as an entity, was created. About Cheagle The Instant Dog. I did learn an awful lot about production and to also trust my own creative instincts. The future was looming large.
