Spring/Summer 1996
As sessions for Dose were wrapping, Peter was putting together
an album, Put On (as Raincoat, playing all the instruments himself.)
It would feature a very proto Hinkley track, Beauty Queen and a killer
Monkees cover, Zor and Zam. Dovetailing with that, Bret came back
on the scene with some grant money and wanting to put together a CD.
With Pete on Drums, Greg on slide and me on bass, we became
The Cheagles, recording a bulk of the disc No More Bandages.

We played a handful of gigs, the best being Bret's CD release show
and art exhibit at The Above Club. Like Black Box, this was a band
I wish could have gone on, if the laws of physics could be bent that far.

At the same time Narcotic Effect started recording the second installment
of the queasy compromise, the lost album Whatever. Unlike Dose,
Pete and I co-wrote most of the songs together. There was an effort
to stretch a little, add some new sounds. We even wrote a song
with the guitar just playing all the open strings (Tired Pilot.)

Freak Music - Volume 1

Plus Greg and I (inspired by Bret) started recording what would be the first official Freak Music disc, Volume 1. Bret joined in, as did Peter. Like some the earlier experimental recordings, it is an audio snapshot of the mood and dynamic of our collective, in that moment.
Volume 1 would also contain musical references to No More Bandages and both Narcotic Effect discs.
And there would be more to come…
