The Official History of Instant Dogma

(Woodrose, snakes & ladders, Freak Music,
Punk Rock Treehouse and everything else.)

1981
(Continued)

Joe rejoined, we played a Battle of The Bands in Marlboro
and Joe quit again. We made demo for Triple A Studios in Boston.
They were looking for bands to promote and stuff.
We were not one of them. Gigs were nonexistent.
Greg moved into Camp Whipsufferage
(code for Steve's apartment and
Marlboro's original name.)
We were broke all winter long, froze and life was a bitch

Though somehow we were able
to buy a 32” fiberglass tympani.

1982

That spring Joe came back. We went into
The Music Underground in Framingham and laid down
Guitarz From Marz, Of The Man (Who Cried For Help)
and Sinner Song. Of The Man and Guitarz were completed quickly.
Sinner Song remained unfinished.
After starting to put together a demo package, and two gigs,
Joe quit for the last time. He wanted to make money
and was clear about a lack of faith.

We played one more gig. A couple of days after,
I noticed a police cruiser driving by
our apartment. As it passed
it slo-o-o-owed down. This was not good, we were on their radar.
The downstairs neighbors were dealing and our place
was not a just-say-no zone. A car would pull up, some kid would run in
and then twenty minutes later they'd be back again, wash, rinse etc.
Shit was about to get real. Greg, Cathi and I decided to bug out.
We grabbed our stuff (we didn't have all that much) and crashed
in Jackson's garage. We had no plan. The band fell apart.
Woodrose was over, for now.

Fall

We were sans home for a few days. Cathi worked in a diner
and would bring back sandwiches, so we had something to eat.
There was a gas station down the street, where we could wash.
This was about as low as it could get.
Eventually Cathi scored an apartment (possibly through
nefarious means.)
Greg and I were in the rehearsal space,
Dave walked in carrying a poster for a battle of the bands.
“You guys wanna do this? It's five hundred bucks”
“Who's gonna sing?” “I will.” Greg and I were in.
We slammed rehearsals and reworked the old material.
