It's hard to accurately describe the mood and environment of the Southboro studio in the winter/spring of 1984. It was our creative incubator, a sacred artistic space. We hid down there a lot. On nights Dave didn't attend rehearsal for our day band (Woodrose) Greg and I recorded, mostly musical experiments, some songs. It was a time of intense productivity. Guru Hamburger was recorded and mixed during this period, just prior to the Automatic There demos. I wanted to make something linear. We began with a couple of songs, built bridge pieces and then added more songs. Greg Sullivan was amazing with his enthusiasm and effort. The project was completed within two weeks. |

GH is an homage to
We're Only In It For The Money by The Mothers, as evidenced by a lot of abrupt edits, random dialogue and a conceptual continuity link to A Two Minute Warning. The premise/story was based on the early Woodrose days. The nickname Guru Hamburger was given to me by Pat (Shakir) White, who used to refer to my attic hangout, on Bradford street, as The Doughnut Hole. He hung out with Greg, Mick and me, during the winter of 1978. Any resemblance to persons living or dead is pretty random. Like many other Freak Music projects, there's a zeitgeist, of a specific place and time. A lot of the folks in our social scene are present on these tracks. Here's a video

The name Freak Music would not be applied for twelve years, however this is the template for the band, a creative partnership Greg and I would share, while exploring experimental music.
